On Friday, November 14th, Grants High School had to call off the day for
the water being shut off in the area.

But how does the school decide that it should be a day off?We talked with Principal Stevy Elkins on this process and she said the school itself “has very little to do with the official decision making process.

“There are big bosses that ultimately make that decision,” Elkins added.

That decision is made by Grants-Cibola County Schools Superintendent
Lane Widner, and the school only gets the word out.

To have the school closed, the issue needs to be serious for the students, “like no water, no heating, gas leaks,” Elkins said.

There are a lot of moving parts to this process and it’s all about communication.
“There are also lots of things to consider, buses, lunches, practices, etc,” Elkins
added. “It’s quite difficult to call off a day of school because of all the factors that
need to be considered.”
